A huge fireball has been spotted whizzing past Earth, days before the annual Perseid meteor shower is set to light up the sky.

The sight promises to be spectacular, and American residents are already reporting sightings of a huge fireball.

Earth is just entering a stream of debris from Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, source of the annual Perseid meteor shower.

But the comet’s fireballs are already making an appearance, Space Weather reported.

Bill Cooke, head of NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office, has been seeing Perseid fireballs since July 30, 2013,EarthSky.org reported.

And now star-gazers in Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi have reported seeing a fireball light up the sky last night.

An observer called ‘Carole H’ from Franklin, Tennessee, posted on the American Meteor Society website said: ‘I happened to look up and saw it flying by. It was amazing to see.’
