Town Founded by Missionaries Won’t Take Down Cross

“The cross was raised up by a grateful community. And this community will fight to keep it.”-Richard Thompson

(Ann Arbor, MI)—The City of Frankenmuth, Michigan, formally rejected a demand by Americans United for Separation of Church and State (AU) to remove a 55 foot steel American Bicentennial Cross on city-owned land. In a July letter, AU claimed the cross on public land unlawfully endorses and promotes Christianity, and asked Frankenmuth to remove the cross or face “a significant risk of litigation.”

Richard Thompson, President and Chief Counsel of the Law Center, in a letter on Friday, responded on behalf of the City, “The cross was raised up by a grateful community. And this community will fight to keep it.”

“The purpose of the cross was not to promote, endorse or coerce anyone to convert to Christianity,” Thompson wrote.

The cross was erected as a part of Frankenmuth’s celebrations of the American Revolution Bicentennial 1776-1976. It was constructed and erected with private funds raised by the Frankenmuth Area Bicentennial Commission. The Cross was erected not only to memorialize the sacrifices made by our Founding Fathers in 1776, but also to memorialize Frankenmuth’s unique history and the sacrifices made by the original 15 settlers who arrived in the Frankenmuth area in1845. These settlers left their homes in the province of Middle Franconia, Bavaria to establish a religious community for the conversion of the Chippewa Indians who lived in the area.

  1. I wish more towns would stand up like this.. Too many towns are worried about offending anyone.. sad, but I am offended because you decide that My Father and the cross on which he gave his life, may offend someone and so I must not talk about it or have an image of it in public…who’s rights are being taken away now….

    • Amen Drell. That’s how I feel. Other people use the whole “Freedom of Religion” stuff in order to enforce a lack of freedom for Christians..and that’s okay…but God forbid if it is about Christianity! Here’s the thing, and Satan really does show himself in obvious ways. The reason all other religions are okay to advocate and discuss in television, movies, publicly, school, etc is because they serve no threat to Satan. Anything that is truly about Jesus Christ, the living Son of God, God in the flesh..well that’s a threat to Satan and his kingdom of hell..but not Christianity. Even the churches who believe in Jesus but preach false doctrine, along with a lukewarm, watered down belief system are not under attack…just your mainstream real hardcore Christians.

  2. the world indeed hates the cross…

    • Amen. That’s because Satan hates the cross, and the world, most unknowingly, follow Satan. If we do not follow Jesus, the enemy is our master. There are only two whom we can choose; God or Satan. This is the place where the enemy was defeated…the cross! Praise God that he’ll eventually be defeated in every way someday very soon!

"If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land." 2 Chronicles 7:14 God's call to the world! Are you ready?
